Think about how many times you visit the dentist’s office each year.

How many times have you paid for each visit out of your own pocket? How much was the charge? In some cases, dental insurance might be beneficial, especially if you’re undergoing expensive dental procedures such as a root canal treatment, braces or a crown. Would you like to know –  is dental insurance worth it?

Keep in mind that these intensive and expensive dental procedures are not done every time. Most dental visits are routine – a check-up and a cleaning.

That’s a big reason why paying dental insurance premiums can be more expensive than paying the actual expenses out your own pocket.

is dental insurance worth it

If you don’t have dental insurance now, is dental insurance worth it?

There is no “one size fits all” answer, but, in many cases, there is a better alternative to dental insurance.

Towards the end of this article we’ll also reveal this alternative to “traditional” dental insurance. This alternative has a lower monthly cost, better benefits than most dental insurance policies and even includes some non-dental benefits not included with dental insurance. Hopefully, we’ll answer if dental insurance is worth it.

What Does Dental Insurance Cover?

If you your employer doesn’t offer dental insurance and you’re shopping around, you’re likely to find a lot of emphasis on diagnostics and preventative care in most low-cost dental insurance packages. Basically, these might include cleanings, annual exams for children or adults, X-rays, fluoride treatments and many more minor, preventative dental procedures.

Many other dental procedures can be covered by dental insurance such as root canal therapy, fillings and crowns. But most dental insurance policies do not cover braces (orthodontics), and if they do, then the coverage amount is only a small fraction of the overall cost.

The perceived major benefit of dental insurance seems to be with more expensive procedures such as root canals, fillings or crowns. The problem with most dental insurance policies is a fairly low maximum coverage limit. And there’s usually a waiting period of up to 6 months for some covered dental treatments.

Many of the dental insurance policies also have a maximum annual benefit amount of under $2,000. That may seem like a lot until you realize that an average root canal treatment is about $1,200 and a crown will run you about $1,000.

With just two procedures, your annual benefit will be more than used up. You will still be paying for the insurance for the rest of the year – you just won’t be covered for anything else until the next coverage year.

So, was the dental insurance worth it?
